Hello, I have been lurking here and on the old forum for a while, and finally registered to ask, why are some people calling the performer goat statue in this season’s valley samurai goat? I can’t see the statue very well as it’s so small….

Welcome to the forum. I think because it looks like a ninja, is dressed like a ninja and is armed like a ninja, or samurai in this case. but maybe you’re wright, and is the goat performing a dance. Attachments:

Actually, I thought it looked like a bust of a composer or a writer on a stack of books, or music scores. I have not a clue what ninjas are dressed like or armed with. Didn’t know also what being a ninja has to do with a performance. I don’t see much need for sarcasm either, but maybe I am just stupid.

I think it looks like it is in Samurai dress and the sword looks Samurai to me. Also looks like it might have 2 swords which is a Samurai thing but I could be totally wrong and it might be something else completely different but I’m hoping it’s Samurai

I think we have to wait and see it on a farm to take a good look at it. I still think it’s a samurai.

Valley decoration rewards collection has a theme of their own. Started with Transport theme (Car, Boat, Airplane...) then sport activities and currently country theme. We had Italy, France, Thailand, Canada.... There is no country name identified, only little details on appearance.
This Season 23 is about Japan. For a bigger image, you will need to visit other social media (twitter/facebook). I embedded the tweet below for you. There is also some discussion elsewhere making comparison with a samurai, although their official name in english is Performer Goat and doesn't make any connection with the country itself. In other languages, some name (not translation) could be really funny (or ridiculous).

The Japanese theme would explain why it looks like a Samurai.
I wonder if it’s called “Performer” as a reference to a famous play or movie about Samurai?

If you take the face paint, the hair bun, the katana, and the kimono the goat is using, it's apparently a Samurai.

I have to laugh. From the bigger image I can see it is not a bust. Also, I thought it was holding a quill pen or a conductor’s baton at shoulder height. Sigh. Thank you for explaining (and a big image).

Thanks to the bigger image posted by Frog On, I'm able to see that the new decoration with the face paint, hair bun, katana, and the kimono. However, as I've learned from watching NHK World Japan, Samurais didn't apply war paint on their faces when going to battle. What I think we're seeing is an actor wearing makeup and dressing like a Samurai to perform Kabuki, a classical form of Japanese dance and drama. And thus, the new decoration is aptly named as the Performer Goat.
If anyone would like to learn about Kabuki and watch highlights of performances, please DuckDuckGo or use your favorite search engine to search for "Kabuki Kool", a program broadcast by NHK World Japan. One of its hosts is well known Kabuki actor Ainosuke Kataoka.
