On previous occasions I posted here and elsewhere there are many of us (perhaps millions) playing Hay Day. And we're in the same community but use different medium to communicate with each other, channels which include JHD, Discord, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit. Speaking of Reddit, recently some players are asking a variation of this question: Why is it so hard to get bolts, planks, or duct tapes? Of course we JHDers know this phenomenon as "Asymmetric Drops of Upgrade Materials". I answered the question in 2021 and quoted my Reddit post several times this week because it has become a FAQ in Hay Day Reddit. I'd like to excerpt it for those who don't know about ADUM.
OP, I'm a level 100+ farmer playing since 2014 and don't know a new meta for getting a specific Upgrade Material (UM) faster.
Here's my strat to upgrade my barn. I get UMs regularly by feeding my pets and playing the Town routinely. Since I accumulate more duct tapes and planks than bolts, I don't hoard duct tapes and planks and keep only the amount I need for the next upgrade. For example, I need 50 more bolts for next upgrade, but I'm keeping exactly 100 tapes and 100 planks.
I think many players refuse to sell any excess UMs because they're so hard to get and thus fall into the trap set by Team Hay Day.

My key takeaway from the presentation is players gain certain materials asymmetrically. Players are divided into 27 groups and get the same expansion tools and same drop rate but there's a permutation so some will get more or less of the tools to encourage selling surplus tools and buying the missing tools...
