On one of my mini-farms I noticed I'd put a single marker stake in the RSS for one coin and not advertised (must have been a few days ago). I went back to my main farm to buy it but by then it was marked as Sold. I went back to my mini-farm and saw it had been bought by Tom. This shouldn't happen, should it? Or can Tom buy things just to clear them from the RSS? I've always assumed when Tom buys something from my RSS it is due to another farmer having sent him to look for the item.

I think Tom (and Greg) can pretty much buy anything in your shop if it wasn't sold in the last day or two. I'm not sure exactly what the timing is on that though.

To avoid Tom or Greg buying tools you should check your RSS regularly. If I sell several products I'm looking the next day whether everything is sold. If not, I advertise it to ensure that another farmer will get the items.
As Tahoe 🐾 statet you also can wait 2 days, but I'm not sure about that, too. So I recommend to take an ealier look than to wait 2 days. Perhaps has another member a more precise information how long it takes until Tom or Greg are buying unsold products or items.

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? When Tom buys an item for us, does he buy it from a real player or generates it from thin air?

My experience is that Tom or Greg will buy off my RSS if an item has been there for a while - it's a particularly good way of getting rid of undesirable items like cloche hats and rustic bouquets. I follow the "thin air" theory as others have mentioned; I simply cannot believe that there are so many farmers out there requesting hats and other undesirable items. As to timing, it's hard to particulaise, but I often see things bought by Tom or Greg the day after they were put up, so I work on the basis of "around 24 hours", but that isn't exact. However, they do seem to buy expansion materials much earlier, so it's best not to leave those on your RSS if you're trying to make a sale to a friend who is not online.

Tom can’t buy items like EMs by running the road up and down. I think it’s in the system and it’s there on purpose, helps us to get rid of items if they are still there after one day. It also makes an additional free crate you can put an item in if your RSS is full.

I have had expansion materials go in a couple hours. Other production type items it's a day or 2 for me as well.

I have a lot of minis and over time I’ve learned to put some things I don’t care about (hats, flowers, crops) in the rss before the things I want to save for another farm. The other thing I’ve noticed is that Tom/Greg tend to buy cheaper items earlier than full price items, so putting stuff in at full price makes them last longer from those bandits.

Cheaper and older items go first. If I don't want Tom or Greg buying stuff, I put 10 wheat for 1 coin up first, before I put anything else for sale. They always take that first.

Nor can he buy products of a machine which had been added so recently no one could have built it yet without use of huge amounts of diamonds, yet I've bought such stuff from him over a dozen times.
