I tried clicking the picture icon but that only prompts for a link. Is the only way to do it to upload to a separate site and link it, or is there a direct upload way?

Thank you! Yes it helps.
For future reference, I'll add that if the pic is too large, click at the bottom where it says 'actual size' and we can change it to smaller size.

Be advised that we might not be able to keep those attachement forever (limited storage). If you want to have control over the image displayed in your post, best ot use external hosting image :
- imgur.com - postimage.org - imgbb.com and more.
These sites often offers to resize your image and make thumbnail as well. ALl you nedd is a direct link such as https://www.somewebsite.com/image.png and wrap the BBCode below around it
[IMG] [/IMG] You should arrive at something similar to the line below for the image to be displayed in your post.

greenleaf I think your mistake is that you use for your answer the white "window" under the previous posting. You have previously to tap on the button "Replay" in the right upper corner. If you do so, the "window" shows the button "Add Attachment". But you must actively tap on this button before you are going to write something. If you miss this, you will fail. Look at my screenshot:

greenleaf Just forgotten... If you've already started an answer without confirming the Replay-button, it doesn't matter. You can do this at every time, but BEFORE sending your answer. When you notice that you are missing the Add Attachment-button, tap on the Replay-button. Your written text will not vanish. It will be shifted in the Replay window. Give it a try.

PeacefulLane's post makes reference to the Full Reply window when you reply to a thread using the " Reply" button and not the "Quick Reply" box underneath the thread. Even if you forget to go to Full Reply mode, simply Edit your post, you will be taken there to see the Attachment button. However, I highly recommend using a 3rd party site to upload picture that you can manage yourself and will let you insert more than 1 image in the same post using BBCode.

Frog greenleaf Yes, I forgot to mention the possibility of using an external hoster. The benefit is, as you stated, to get multiple pictures in one posting and the second, more important would be not to strain the storage for those things from our forum. It's limited to max 1 MB and for this reason it's recommended to use an external hoster.

You can start your learning journey from here (so my effort to write all that isn't wasted ): justhayday.boards.net/thread/106/started-on-hay-day, and follow the various Help links available. In case you need help, please start appropriate thread in Forum Talk board. That way, the info will benefit other members and can be easily found in the future.
